Message From the Publisher

IN THIS ISSUE we welcome back Scott Goodall, one of Frew's all-time popular Phantom story-tellers, with his latest adventure, 'The Freedom Trail'.  Scott, who never fails to construct inventive, but always meticulously researched plots, this time combines with artist Felmang to transport us back to the days of the Civil War in America.

The Goodall story is as much about the invention of dynamite by Alfred Nobel as it is about the bloody Civil War conflict.  In the vast area of explosives, dynamite is a word known to virtually everybody in the world.  Dynamite has been put to so many worthwhile (and evil) purposes, that it may come as a surprise to some to learn that the inventor's name is now linked to the world-famous Nobel Peace Prize.  As I so often advise, it will be well worth your while delving into some research, not only about the history of dynamite, but Alfred Nobel and his life and times.

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 21, 1833 and died in retirement on the Italian Riviera, on December 10, 1896 aged only 63.  Australian recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize have included Adelaide-born scientist Howard Florey who shared the award in 1945 with Dr Ernest Chain for developing penicillin, the first antibiotic, and author Patrick White (1973).  In more recent times, another recipient has been the East Timorese political advisor Jose Ramos Horta, a man very much in the news these days!

I know you will enjoy 'The Freedom Trail' because it showcases Scott Goodall's talents at his very best, the high drama and vivid action scenes interspeded with touches of the famous dry Phantom wit and especially some well chosen words about the health hazards linked with smoking (cigars in this particular case!).   Now maybe, just maybe, Scott Goodall has stretched the truth a little by placing Alfred Nobel in the middle of the American Civil War!  Do your own research and see what you can discover!

Again, a big welcome back to Scott Goodall.  Let's hope it will not be such a long time before his scripting again graces our pages!

We have at least four new Scandinavian stories to present before the end of 1999 and one of these will appear in our end-of-year Christmas edition.   Then we move straight into our super blockbuster special to mark the commencement of the year 2000, wrapped in possibly our most innovative covers ever (!!), bursting with a large number of first-ever complete presentations of some of Lee Falk's classic stories (all chosen by reader poll) and of course yet another replica of an original Frew edition from 1949.

Thanks to the enthusiasts who contacted us to say how much they enjoyed the recently published story, 'The Temple' which was originally entitled 'The Link" by writer Ben Raab who is, of course, a newcomer to Frew editions.  For the record, he's an American, based in New York City.  I hope to bring you more information about Ben in the not too distant future.
