A scene from 'Redbeard the Traitor'.

George Olesen has been working with the Phantom strip since the 1960s, helping Sy Barry.  After Sy Barry's retirement from the strip in 1994, George was recognised as the official penciller.  He currently shares the strip with inkers Keith Williams (dailies) and Fred Fredericks (Sundays).

Because of George's previous work with Sy Barry, the difference in artork when the strip changed hands was not as noticable as when Sy Barry took over from Wilson McCoy.  Similarities between Sy Barry's work and that of George Olesen can easily be seen in the strip below (from 'The Ghost Wall').  The first and last frames in this strip were used in the early 90s by Sy Barry.

Apart from Lee Falk's newspaper comic strips, George has also drawn two European stories, 'Redbeard the Traitor', which appeared in Frew issue #998 and Fantomet issue Nr. 8/91 plus 'The Assassin' appearing in Frew issue #1015 and Fantomet issue Nr. 4/92.

For the first time now, two artists (Olesen & Fredericks or Olesen & Williams) have been given byline credit on the Phantom strip.

Below is an original pencilling from the daily story, 'Terror at the Opera'.
