A scene from 'The Sky Band'.

Ray Moore was born in 1905, in Montgomery City, Missouri.   Originally he was assisting Phil Davis with the Mandrake strips until he was assigned to the Phantom by King Features.

Moore began work with the Phantom about two weeks into the first story, 'The Singh Brotherhood', after taking over from Lee Falk.  Later he was assisted by Wilson McCoy, who actually did a lot of stories while Moore was still given full credit.

During world war two, Moore signed up, while McCoy remained and continued the strip (still under Moore's name).  Moore returned in 1945 and did a handful of stories, but could not continue due to a severe nervous disorder and officially handed the strips to McCoy in 1949.

The images below show the evolution of Ray Moore's work.   The first is from the 1937 story, 'The Sky Band' and the second is from 'Princess Valerie' from 1946.
