Bill Lignante was born on March 20th, and had only illustrated two syndicated Phantom strips. His first job with the Phantom was finishing off 'The Limper' soon after Wilson McCoy's death in 1961. He then went on to do 'Queen Samaris XII' where he showed the Phantom's eyes in the later part of the story. Although Bill only had a short career doing Lee Falk's Sunday strips, he went on and did the whole Gold Key series (both writing and illustrating). His stories also appeared in the King and Charlton series and have been reprinted all over the world. Below is part of an original sheet from 'Magic Mountain', which appeared in King no. 22.
During his work on the Sunday strip, Bill made a number of improvements to the Phantom. Some of these include the fact that the Phantom's gun holsters were no longer stuck to his legs and his ears made lumps in his costume. Bill had also worked on the syndicated strip 'Ozark Ike' and animated cartoons for Hanna-Barbera. He is now retired after establishing himself as one of the world's greatest courtroom artists.
