A sketch by André. |
André LeBlanc was born on the 16th of January, 1921.
He assisted Sy Barry with both the daily and Sunday Phantom strips from the early 1970s
and on and off until Sy's retirement in 1994. His first story was 'Mystery of
Kula-Ku'. He also worked with the entire wedding series and other popular stories
such as 'The Eastern Dark'.
Apart from the Phantom, André also did the Mandrake stories
which appeared in King's Mandrake comic book series during the 1960s. He illustrated
syndicated strips "Apartment 3G" and "Rex Morgan MD"; had his own
strips "Morena Flor" and "Intellectual Amos"; and had assisted with
"Flash Gordon" and "The Spirit."
Besides his work with comics, he has
illustrated the 'Picture Bible' which was published during the sixties, school text books,
and various other books like Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and
"Kidnapped." For his illustration of
classic literature, André has recieved the Southern Cross, the greatest honour which can
be bestowed on a Brazillian citizen.
Unfortunately, André LeBlanc died on December 21st, 1998.
He was a fantastic character who will be greatly missed. His final Phantom
image appeared on the cover of the Friends of the Phantom newsletter no. 18. |
