Romano Felmang was born in 1941, in Rome, where he still resides with his two children. He drew the Phantom in the 60's for Italian publisher, Fratelli Spada, until the magazine ceased. Since 1986, he has been illustrating Phantom adventures for Swedish Phantom comics (Semic/Egmont). Many of his stories are featured in Frew and his work appeared in the first Wolf Phantom comic. It has often been said that Romano has based his work around that of Sy Barry's. Have a look at the Phantom in the frames below: The frame on the left is from 'The Drummer of Timpenni' (1964) by Sy Barry, the other is from 'The Black Phantom' (1999) by Felmang.
Felmang was also the first non-Australian to illustrate a Phantom cover for Frew. His work first appeared on the cover of issue no. 1080 (left) and has also appeared on issue no. 1152. Thanks to Romano Felmang, Ed Rhoades & Frew Publications The Phantom 1999 King Features
